Alcohol

Alcohol is a depressant and the most widely abused drug; used by 52% of NJ students before they finish 8th grade.

Some common terms associated with the abuse of alcohol, especially among young people:

  • Jell-O Shots - Making Jell-O with hard liquor instead of water.

  • Funnels - Using a funnel and plastic tube to drink beer quickly.

  • Keg Stands - Doing a hand-stand on a keg and drinking beer directly from the tap.

  • Shot Gunning - Piercing a beer can to drink faster.

  • Kings - Popular drinking game using playing cards.

  • Beer Pong - Popular drinking game using plastic cups and ping-pong balls.

  • Quarters - Popular drinking game where a quarter must be bounced into a shot glass.

  • Alco Pops - Term used to describe alcoholic beverages that appeal to youth because of their sweet, soda-like flavors.  These include Mike's Hard Lemonade, Twisted Tea, Smirnoff Ice, etc.

The short term effects of abusing alcohol may include: Reduced Inhibition, dizziness, slurred speech and aggression.

The long term effects of abusing alcohol may include Alcoholism, withdrawal symptoms, and brain & liver damage. One-third of fatal car crashes are alcohol related.
