Drinking

Don’t say “It’s Only Alcohol!”

For young people, alcohol is the number one drug of choice. Many parents of 5th grade students do not think their children are drinking yet.  However, half of New Jersey 7th and 8th grade students have tried alcohol. Even if your child is not drinking, he or she may be receiving pressure to drink from the media, peers and other sources.  Parents can have a major impact on their child’s attitude toward alcohol, especially during the adolescent years.

 Alcohol Facts for Parents:

  • Children who begin drinking alcohol before the age of 15 are 5 times more likely than those who start after age 21 to develop alcohol problems.
  • Kids who use alcohol are more likely to become sexually active at an earlier age and to have unprotected sex than those who do not drink.
  • Kids who drink are more likely than others to be victims of violent crime, including rape, aggravated assault and robbery.
  • Many children do not know that alcohol impairs judgment and adolescent drinkers are more likely to engage in hazardous activities.
